How to Prevent the Spongy Heart of Radish?

In the late period of growth, the centre of the radish is often hollow, which is called sponginess of the radish. Sponginess will reduce the weight, and sugar contents, quality and marketability. Sponginess is relative to the varieties, cultivation conditions, temperature and sunlight condition.
(1) Varieties. Varieties with loose pulp, low sugar content, fast growth of expansion, big parenchyma cells. Prevention measures: choose varieties with dense pulp, high dry matter content.
(2) Cultivation conditions
① fertilization conditions have effects on the appearance of sponginess. In the condition with more nitrogen fertilizer, the fleshy root expand rapidly and the assimilation materials above the field can not be supplied correspondently. Therefore, the sponginess will occur. Prevention measures: supply rational fertilization, and try to promote root development, prevent excessive nitrogen fertilizer, and make a good balance between the growth of the root and the leaves.
② planting density. Too large distance between plants with adequate soil fertility will accelerate the vigorous growth of the root and form sponginess. Prevention measures: supply rational density when planting. appropriately increase planting density to inhibit the growth of the leaves and ensure enough nutrition of the root.
③ soil moisture. Radish grows in the moist soil and soluble solids of the root decline. In this condition, if the leaves have excessively vigorous growth, the sponginess of the root will be serious. Prevention measures: supply uniformed soil water, keep the soil moisture content to be 70% -80%, and prevent excessive moisture in the early stage and drought in the late stage.
(3) temperature and sunshine
Radish likes higher temperature in the daytime and lower temperature in the night. Lack of sunshine intensity, photosynthetic capacity of the leaves will be worse, and the assimilation matters will be less, sugar synthesis will also be less, therefore, increase the light intensity, and reduce shade area is important.
